Today I’m giving a huge shout out to my full-time job for all of their Wellness Programs, and also explain why I just quit my second “job”. Let’s discuss!

Let me start off by saying I’m really lucky because I actually like my job. It’s about a 10-15 minute drive from my house, I like what I do (communications) and my manager is great.  What I like most about my job is their overall Wellness program. They really try to promote a healthy and active lifestyle through a lot of their initiatives which have really taken off within the last two years. Some of these initiatives include:

  • $300 (before taxes) toward your health/gym membership. All I have to do is submit a statement (usually in December) from my gym showing the monthly charges for the year. Easy peasy!
  • $300 towards any medical expenses for the year. Basically all you have to do is get an on-site wellness exam (finger prick test, height, weight, blood pressure, etc). It takes about 5 minutes – really simple.
  • Wellness Champions for each location. These are employees that volunteer to share knowledge on a bunch of different health topics.
  • Wellbeing group on our company’s intranet website. This is a great source of information for employees – recipes, exercise and nutrition tips, personal stories, etc. It’s a fantastic way for employees to share information and learn ideas

Finally, one of the better programs offered is the Global Corporate Challenge. Have you heard of the Global Corporate Challenge (GCC)? Many different organizations take part in it every year. It’s basically a global physical activity team challenge. Teams of employees (usually 7 people) dedicate 100 days to physical fitness and activity. The main part of this challenge revolves around getting in 10,000 or more steps per day. To help with this goal, each employee participating in the challenge was given a GCC Pulse Accelerometers.

What I really love about this program is that it really encourages everyone to get moving. This year the program has over 1,000 teams, and at 7 people per team, that’s making an impact on a large amount of employees! The program also has information on proper nutrition and sleeping
